Top Surfing Safety Tips

Whether pleasure or competition; surfing is an awesome sport to be into. It's wise to consider always though the potential dangers, and the basic rules that all need to follow for the sake of safety.

Often the surf breaks into beaches crowded with many surfers looking for the same waves you are. If y'all follow basic rules, it should be a great day of surf for everyone.

Before ever surfing, you should always have a lesson or more from a qualified surfing instructor. This is of the utmost importance. Without training, you can be badly injured.

If you can't swim 50 meters (55 yards) in water, you shouldn't be surfing as you need more endurance, stamina, etc…

Look out for others including those fishing. Remember they have as much right to be there as you. Be considerate of all on the beach and in the water.

It's very wise to surf in lifeguard protected waters. Obey them and always be prepared to follow their instructions.

It's also wise to surf in waters designated as surfing areas. It may vary from one country to the next; however there should be markers for the proper area. Stick within them as much as possible.

Like anywhere else, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol when surfing is not only dangerous to you, it is also dangerous for others. It could be against the law as well.

Always maintain your surfing gear in safe condition.

You should always use a surf leash with your surfboard or body board. This is to protect others from your board, and remember, your board is your personal safety device as well.

Always wait after a meal before surfing, and never surf alone.

You want to be done and back on land before nightfall.

You should always wear a wetsuit when in cold water or anywhere near reefs that you could wind up in (breaks, etc). It could be the difference between injury/hypothermia and going home in the shape you arrived in.

While paddling out, stay clear of those already surfing the waves.

Never expect others to share waves. You must never take off for a wave that already has another riding it. This is dangerous.

Leave the beach and waters like you found them, or better. Don't litter, or leave a mess.
